1. Who we are, and how you accept these terms

FoodNet is a food-focused social app and website operated by an individual developer, Teddy Lazar ("FoodNet", "we", "us"). FoodNet is a free service with no ads. It includes an iOS app for sharing food posts, saving and publishing recipes, tracking your pantry, planning meals, and chatting with an AI assistant, plus a public website featuring a historical cookbook archive.

By creating a FoodNet account you agree to these terms. The signup screen tells you this at the moment you sign up. If you use the public website without an account, these terms still apply to your use of it. If you do not agree with these terms, do not use FoodNet.

2. Your account

  • Registration currently requires an invite code.
  • Provide accurate information when you sign up, and keep it up to date.
  • One account per person. Your account is for you, not for a bot, a brand, or a group.
  • Keep your password and credentials safe. You are responsible for activity that happens under your account. Tell us promptly if you believe your account has been compromised.
  • You must be legally able to enter into these terms. FoodNet is not directed at children under 13, and you may not create an account if you are under 13.

3. Your content

"Your content" means anything you submit to FoodNet: posts and their images, comments, likes and dislikes, recipes you create, pantry and meal plan data, and anything you send to the chat assistant.

  • You own your content. Posting on FoodNet does not transfer ownership to us.
  • You grant us a license to run the service. So that FoodNet can work at all, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, display, and distribute your content as needed to operate, provide, and improve the service. This license ends when you or we delete the content, except that copies may persist for a time in backups and soft-deleted records (see the Privacy Policy for retention details), and except where you shared the content publicly and others have already seen or linked to it.
  • Public content is public. Posts on the feed, published recipes, and public profiles (if you turn on the public profile option) are visible to other users. Published recipes get a stable public link that anyone with the link can open. Do not publish anything you want to keep private.
  • You are responsible for what you post. Only post content you have the right to post. Do not post other people's copyrighted work, private information, or anything unlawful.

4. Acceptable use

Do not use FoodNet to:

  • Harass, threaten, or abuse anyone.
  • Post spam, scams, or misleading content.
  • Post illegal content, or content that infringes someone else's rights.
  • Scrape, harvest, or bulk-download content or data from the service, including the archive, by automated means.
  • Abuse the AI features, including attempts to make the assistant act against these terms, generate harmful content, or take actions on another person's account.
  • Circumvent rate limits, invite requirements, or other technical protections.
  • Probe, attack, or attempt to gain access to accounts, data, or systems that are not yours.

We apply rate limits to keep the service healthy. Attempting to evade them is a violation of these terms.

5. AI features

FoodNet includes an AI chat assistant (powered by third-party AI providers, currently Anthropic and OpenAI) and AI-assisted features such as ingredient matching and nutrition estimation.

  • The assistant can act on your account at your direction. When you ask it to, the assistant can do things like update your pantry, save recipes, manage your meal plan and grocery list, and create posts. It only creates posts when you explicitly ask it to. Review what it does; you are responsible for actions taken through your account.
  • Outputs can be wrong. AI-generated answers, recipe suggestions, modernized texts, and nutrition figures can contain mistakes. Use your own judgment.
  • Nutrition information is an estimate, not advice. Nutrition values are estimated from ingredient matching and AI processing. They are informational only and are never a substitute for professional dietary or medical advice.
  • Do not rely on FoodNet for allergy safety. Allergen and dietary information may be incomplete or incorrect. If you have an allergy or a medical dietary requirement, verify every ingredient yourself before cooking or eating.

6. The Archive

The FoodNet website includes a historical cookbook archive.

  • Archive texts come from public-domain scans sourced via the Internet Archive. We preserve attribution to the original works and their Internet Archive records.
  • AI-modernized versions of these texts are machine-generated interpretations, provided as-is. They may contain transcription or interpretation errors, and historical recipes may reflect practices that are unsafe by modern standards. Use modernized recipes with care.
  • If you believe content in the archive infringes your rights or should be removed for another reason, contact us and we will review the request. We honor legitimate removal requests. To report claimed copyright infringement, send a notice identifying the work, the material you want removed, your contact information, and a statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is unauthorized, made under penalty of perjury. 7. Moderation and termination

  • You can report posts and other content in the app. We review reports.
  • We may remove or hide content, and suspend or terminate accounts, that violate these terms, harm other users, or create legal risk for the service. Where practical we will tell you why, but we are not obligated to give advance notice for serious violations.
  • You can stop using FoodNet at any time. Account deletion is described in the Privacy Policy.
  • Sections that by their nature should survive (your license grant for already-public content, disclaimers, liability limits, governing law) survive termination.

8. Disclaimers and limitation of liability

Plain English first: FoodNet is a free service run by one person. We work to keep it reliable and safe, but we cannot promise it will always be available, error-free, or right.

  • The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.
  • We do not warrant the accuracy of recipes, nutrition estimates, allergen information, AI outputs, or archive texts.
  • To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, arising from your use of the service.
  • To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for all claims relating to the service is capped at 50 US dollars or the amount you paid us in the past 12 months, whichever is greater. (FoodNet is currently free, so that amount is likely zero.)
  • Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty disclaimers or liability limits; where that is the case, these sections apply to the fullest extent permitted.

9. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the service evolves. When we make material changes we will update the "Last updated" date above and take reasonable steps to notify you, such as a notice in the app or on the website. Continuing to use FoodNet after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.

10. Governing law
